Oral pathology is at the confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry. It deals with nature, identification and management of diseases of oral and maxillofacial structures. It is the science that investigates the causes, process & effects of these diseases. It utilizes various means like cytology, biopsy, biochemical investigations & advanced investigative techniques (e.g. IHC & PCR) for accurate diagnosis and further patient management. Oral Pathology is the speciality of dentistry & discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification & management of disease affecting the oral & maxillofacial regions (the mouth & jaw area). It is a science that investigates the causes, processes, & effects of these diseases.
The undergraduate students in this department include the First Year and the Third Year students for the subjects Dental Anatomy & Dental Histology, and Oral Pathology & Oral Microbiology respectively.
Dental Anatomy including Embryology and Oral Histology – a composite of basic Dental Sciences & their clinical applications.
The student should acquire basic skills in :
1. Carving of crowns of permanent teeth in wax.
2. Microscopic study of Oral tissues.
3. Identification of Deciduous & Permanent teeth.
4. Age estimation by patterns of teeth eruption from plaster casts of different age groups.
1. The student is expected to appreciate the normal development, morphology, structure & functions of oral tissues & variations in different pathological/non-pathological states.
2. The student should understand the histological basis of various dental treatment procedures and physiologic ageing process in the dental tissues.
3. The students must know the basic knowledge of various research methodologies.

(i) practice respective speciality efficiently and effectively, backed by scientific knowledge and skill;
(ii) exercise empathy and a caring attitude and maintain high ethical standard
(iii) continue to evince keen interest in professional education in the speciality and allied specialities whether in teaching or practice
(iv) willing to share the knowledge and skills with any learner, junior or a colleague
(v) to develop the faculty for critical analysis and evaluation of various concepts and views and to adopt the most rational approach.
